What is the difference between the Section 8 and Public Housing application?
The Section 8 and Public housing programs are administered by local PHA’s. HUD provides funding for low income housing programs and agencies that are interested in developing urban areas are eligible to receive funding from HUD. The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program allows the applicant to choose their own apartment or dwelling. Their voucher will pay about seventy percent of their monthly rent. In the Public Housing program, applicants must live in an apartment complex that is owned by the issuing PHA. The applicant can not choose their own landlord. It can be confusing, but keep in mind that it all falls under the umbrella of low income housing programs. A HUD application form is really about these housing programs that are ran locally by housing authorities. The application process is free. Applicants must be prepared for extensive waiting lists whether they choose section 8 or apply for public housing.

How can I apply for Public Housing online?
In order to apply for public housing, you must first find a PHA that has an open waiting list. When you apply for Section 8, it does not mean that you have completed a public housing application. They are two separate programs
that require a different application process. After an applicant has filled out a Public housing application and
has been accepted in to the program, they will move into an apartment complex that is owned by the housing authority. When people want to apply for low income housing, they are most likely considering Section 8 or public housing. With section 8, about seventy percent of their rent will be taken care of by the program. Families that are eligible will be those that meet median low income levels mandated by HUD.
