What is a low income housing application for and how can I apply online?
Low income housing is just an umbrella term that can cover a multitude of government subsidized programs. The most popular rental assistance program is the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. The voucher program allows the family or individual that fills out a low income housing application to choose where they want to live. It is always free to apply. Any independent landlord can rent to a section 8 tenant provided that their property passes an inspection. The purpose of this program is to provide decent and safe housing for low income families and individuals. So, when someone applies for low income housing, they might fill out a public housing application, section 8 application or any government rental assistance application that is offered in their area.
How can I apply for Public Housing?
In order to apply for public housing, you must first find a PHA that has an open waiting list. When you apply for Section 8, it does not mean that you have completed a public housing application. They are two separate programs that require a different application process. Thus, HUD in itself is not the section 8 rental assistance program. In conclusion, HUD does however fund Federal housing agencies that run these programs on a city wide level.
